Opportunity to get involved as a lay member in developing our guideline on Children and young people with disabilities & severe complex needs

NICE guideline on Children and young people with disabilities & severe complex needs

National Institute for Health and Care Excellence are currently looking for people with an understanding of the health and social care support that is important for children and young people with disabilities and severe complex needs. We need them to join us and help develop our guideline on Children and young people with disabilities & severe complex needs: integrated health & social care support & service guidance.

This guideline will cover children and young people from birth to 25 years with disabilities (as defined by the Equality Act 2010 – so someone who has a physical or mental impairment that has a substantial and long-term negative effect on their ability to do normal daily activities) and severe complex needs. Severe complex needs refers to an ongoing need for integrated health and social care support and services.

National Institute for Health and Care Excellence are looking for people to join a committee developing NICE guidance for the NHS and local government, if they:

  • have personal experience as a disabled child or young person with severe and complex needs and have received treatment and care provided by both the NHS and social care services (please note that you need to be 16 and over to join this committee)
  • are a parent, relative or unpaid carer of a child or young person who has used relevant health and social care services
  •  are a volunteer or employee of a relevant voluntary organisation or support group

They are welcoming an application from those who have recent experience or knowledge of this topic and are able to reflect the views, experiences and needs of the public to ensure they are included in the development of this guideline. They need to be able to contribute effectively in a committee meeting, but would receive lots of support as well as training from NICE’s public involvement team in order to do this. Our lay members are paid a fee to attend meetings and we cover travel and other expenses.

This is the recruitment advert for the roles which details what membership involves, the kind of experience and knowledge we are looking for, and how to apply. The closing date for applications is 5pm on Tuesday 5 February 2019.
