Healthwatch Blackpool is proud to support the launch of a new community-based spirometry service, designed to make vital respiratory health checks more accessible to local people, particularly those living in priority wards across Blackpool.
This service is part of our ongoing commitment to understanding and improving access to health and care in areas where residents face the greatest health inequalities.
Developed in partnership with healthcare providers and local GP surgeries, the service is now live and operating from the Health Bus, a mobile health unit offering care right where people live. It currently supports patients registered with St Paul’s, King Street and Adelaide Street GP surgeries.
What is a Spirometry Test?
A spirometry test measures how well your lungs are working, how much air you can breathe in and out, and how quickly you can exhale. It plays a key role in diagnosing conditions such as asthma and COPD, and in supporting people to better manage their respiratory health.
Community Care Without the Barriers
One of the most important features of this new service is its accessibility. There’s no need for an appointment. If you’re 18 or over, you can simply drop in when the Health Bus is in your area.
This approach supports residents who may find it difficult to attend traditional appointments due to transport, health, or other challenges, a key issue we continue to explore through our work in priority wards across Blackpool.

Speak with our community engagement team for advice and support
Access assessments from community matrons and therapists
Receive guidance from health and wellbeing coaches
Together, we hope these services provide a more joined-up and holistic approach to health and care in the community.
Why It Matters
This service is a direct response to the insight gathered through our ongoing work to understand the experiences and needs of people living in Blackpool’s most disadvantaged areas.
Many residents have told us that care can feel out of reach or difficult to navigate, and that flexible, local solutions are needed.
By bringing care directly into communities, this project helps address those concerns and remove some of the practical barriers people face when trying to look after their health.
