Junior doctors have announced they will go on strike for 96-hours from 7am on Tuesday 11 April until 7am, Saturday 15 April – amounting to 24 hours more than their first walkout earlier this month.
In a statement on 23 March, the British Medical Association said the government hadn’t made any credible pay offer when junior doctor representatives met health secretary Steve Barclay this week.
The ongoing dispute spells further disruption to patients. In the earlier 72-hour strike, 181,009 operations, hospital outpatient appointments, or community, mental health and learning disability appointments had to be rescheduled, according to NHS England data.
Overall, 17,866 inpatient procedures, 157,256 outpatient appointments and 5,887 community health trust appointments were rescheduled by hospital trusts across England. This drove up the impact on patients, since industrial action began in December 2022, from around 140,000 to more than 320,000 affected patient care dates.

Meanwhile, nurse and ambulance unions have yet to announce whether their members will accept a pay offer from government. Results are expected in the next few weeks.
