Our new Blackpool project: Conversations about cancer

Healthwatch Blackpool is working with the NHS Lancashire and South Cumbria ICB Population Health Team on a new project to help people in Blackpool understand more about cancer.

We want to know what local people understand about cancer signs, symptoms, and screening, and how easy it is for them to get help or support if they need it.

Why is this important?

Blackpool has higher rates of cancer and cancer-related deaths than other areas in the region and across the country (JSNA, 2023). But if cancer is found early, treatment is often more successful.

Our aim is to:

  • Help people spot the signs and symptoms of cancer sooner

  • Raise awareness about cancer screening programmes

  • Find out what people already know and what support they need

  • Encourage people to get help when they notice something isn’t right

We’ll be talking to local residents to gather feedback and provide useful information, following the Talk Cancer approach, a method designed to raise awareness and start open conversations about cancer.

We want to support earlier diagnosis and promote better outcomes for people living in Blackpool.
